I think I wandered into someone else’s life by accident

I am not by nature a ministering angel.  If I had to describe myself, it would be as competent and reasonably kind, but also self-centered and lazy.  I’m therefore surprised every morning when I wake up and remember all over again that mine is the life of a caregiver:  a sick, aged parent; a tween; a teen; and a 50s style-husband.  It’s not a natural fit for my personality.

The last few days have been a little more demanding than usual in terms of the level of care my givees have required.  I’m therefore posting a video in honor of myself (and my innate selfishness).  Whenever you hear “Britney,” substitute in “Bookworm”:

My dearest and best friend is coping as well as you are. She has already lived long enough and an only child to have cared for both parents, one single aunt, an uncle, whose kids couldn’t stand him, raised two sons with varying degrees of learning disabilities. Finally… finished with the care giving, sons grown up (one married with a child) both are doing fine. She and her husband finally had the “golden years” to look forward to when he was diagnosed with Parkinsons with a side of dementia. A lover of the opera, she was determined to celebrate their anniversary this week and go to NYC for 3-nights, two operas and whatever else they (he) could manage. They planned to leave at noon. She did, find the strength to send me an email before the doctor’s appt.

“[name redacted] awoke with no hearing in one ear. doc today at at 1:30.  if u see my obit you will know i didn’t make it to the opera.
do yourself a favor, don’t call me.
he put the wrong med in his ear last nite.”

I haven’t heard from her or read an obit – it’s a good sign.
We got a video from you even a better sign.
Neither of you have lost your sense of humor.

Laughter is definitely the best antidote to tears.

As long as you can laugh at your situation, your doing alright.  And if you can post that video, your sense of humor is intact.

The same person who did the Britney video also did a “Leave Barack Alone” video.

And you slog through as best you can, as others depend on you. My grandmother lived to 95, and  I was blessed to have the opportunities to have many conversations with her when I was an adult.
