Good for the Marines.
As you no doubt know Book, Naval Aviation and Marine Aviation are joined at the hip, although the Marines are not always such willing partners. Naval and Marine aviation have always merged training. Thus, I had many Marines as flight instructors. Actually, both the first and last were Marines. My primary instructor, a wonderful fellow with great patience and strength (and a Yale graduate), was a Marine; and my last instructor in advanced training was as well. (We lost two students out of our flight of six in a mid-air collision. We were his first flight, and I am sure it tore him to pieces, but he handled the situation with great professionalism and led the remainder of the flight to completion of our training. I am looking at a picture hanging above my computer of him pinning on my wings. Damn, we were young.) We had a Marine squadron attached to our Wing on my first carrier deployment. Much later when I had command of an advanced jet training squadron, about 1/3 of my Officer-Instructors were Marines.
The Marine Corps is a wonderful organization; and I have found that many of their officers are extremely professional. For several reasons I passed on the opportunity to become a Marine during my Cadet phase. The Marines were responsible for all of the military training for Cadets and it was not a pleasant experience when I had to march my young self into the Major’s office and tell him of my decision. I have always wondered where it would have led had I followed my initial instinct.
Good for you for recognizing one of our truly great institutions. I always appreciate your expressed devotion to the Naval Service (which includes the Corps).
