Thoughts for the day

Continuing quotes from 1,911 Best Things Anybody Ever Said –

We are here and it is now.  Further than that all human knowledge is moonshine.  H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)

There are plenty of good five-cent cigars in the country.  The trouble is they cost a quarter.  What this country really needs is a good five-cent nickel.  Franklin P. Adams (1881-1960)

When it is not necessary to make a decision, it is necessary to not make a decision.  Lord Falkland (1610-1643)

As to that last one, I’d say, “When it is not necessary to make a law, it is necessary to not make a law.”  Wish our governments, at all levels, would take that one to heart!

When the famous iron bridge across the Severn was constructed, English legislators were passing bills to compel the American colonies, to trade only with the mother country, and to tax them without their consent. Lord Sheffield said, with charming frankness, that the colonies were founded with the sole view of securing to England a monopoly of their trade; and Lord Chatham declared that they would not be permitted to make even a nail or a horseshoe.
-Charles H. Ham, Mind and Hand: manual training, the chief factor in education (1900)

The bridge still stands, the best laid plans of politicians not so much

Not an aphorism… well, come to think of it, maybe it is.  At some sort of society do in London back in the late 1920s, GB Shaw and Churchill were talking.  They were standing near the entrance to the ballroom, and as everyone came in they were announced by a footman.  Shaw and Churchill happened to be standing close enough to overhear a gaggle of women, who, as each couple were announced, never failed to come up with a – generally bitchy – comment for the female half: who she thought she was, what she was wearing, her hair, her shoes; pretty much everything.  Shaw and Churchill listened to this without comment for a while, until finally Shaw turned to Churchill and said: “you know, it isn’t just homosexuals who don’t like women – hardly anybody does.”

From an Andy Capp cartoon many years ago: “If you haven’t made a decision, you’ve made a decision.”

It is what it is. Deal with it.

It’s 1936 and Eleanor Roosevelt is on the hustings for Franklin in a backwoods West Virginia hamlet. Eleanor is addressing the townspeople in a church when a voice shouts out from the back:

“Franklin Delano Roosevelt f***s his mother!”

All are shocked and look instantly to see what what Eleanor will say.

    She draws herself up.

“Nevertheless,” she says, and continues her speech.
