Carmen Berra, Yogi’s wife asked: “Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?” Yogi’s answer: “Surprise me.”
I’ve often used the Lily Tomlin quote…glad to know where it’s from. Assuming she didn’t “borrow” it, of course.
A propos of Oscar Wilde’s quote above, I used to tell my Foundations of Biology students that the point at which I was SURE I knew the most was when I’d finished my freshman year college Zoology class. Three entire quarters mastering the names, habits, etc. of the animal kingdom….I felt STUFFED with knowledge.
And I was, of course….but it turned out that from that point on, as I continued to learn I could see that I was like Newton…playing with a few pebbles on the beach, with the vast ocean of knowledge stretching off into the distance.
Keeping that perspective helped me relate to my students in a healthier way than some of my former profs…..
