Mike #5:

Of course, the interviewee would get a copy of the questions beforehand, and would be able to demand their own questions be asked of them, and would also get to ask a few questions. The interviewee would also be allowed to have a set of their own documents on the table before them, and have a team of researchers and gophers on line, with the with the head of the team able to listen to the intervieew and talk directly into the interviewee's ear, and have a computer screen for the interviewee. And like Mike says, record the entire interview with their own cameras, and get a copy of whatever the interviewing studio gets recorded. The interviewing studio would also be required to post the entire, cut and uncut interview online within 24 hours of the interview being aired.

Sound far-fetched? This is what interviewers and Obama do all the time.

Yes! Yes Yes! Oops, sounds like 1970'sporn, but imagine what could have happened if Sarah Palin had had her own copy of the interview with Katie Couric, showing how they carefully edited her answers to make her seem stupid. OTOH, presented with counter evidence, they just get a bored look and move on.

If I were the GOP, I would - to use one of Barack Obama's favorite words - INVEST in a bunch of videocamera guys and sound microphone guys. One of each shows up to EVERY interview your guys has with the media, and takes an independent record of the entire interview.

We have to combat their selective editing, too.

Mike, great suggestion. If conservative politicians would start baiting the media, it would be very entertaining---and revealing.

When I get home from work, I bounce to Ace and then eventually here. So I read the Marco Rubio piece.

I think Marco Rubio stepped in it, unfortunately. It wasn't a terrible answer. But my God, our conservative politicians need to PRACTICE evading these trap questions.

Question: How old do you think the Earth is.

Answer: I'm not sure. (AND STOP THERE DAMN IT!)

Question: No, really, it's a serious question, how old DO you think the Earth is?

Answer: I told you: I'm not sure. There are a lot of theories out there, and some make more sense than others. But I have to tell you, I look at all the issues facing Americans today, and I find your question completely irrelevant. I think any answer I get will piss off people who don't agree with my specific answer. And the answer doesn't really matter, does it? So I want an answer from YOU: Why do you think this is an important question?

And from that point on, refuse to go any further until you get that answer, or the interviewer gives up and moves on to something that DOES matter.

Turn it on them. Expose the trap for what it is: A deliberate attempt to split and divide his voters from him.
