While I want to retain optimist and hope for the future, I find it increasingly harder to do so, due to everything that is going on in the world.

I don't really want to hold a bleak vision for the future, but unfortunately, I do not see how any other conclusion can be reasonably reached at the current time.

At this point, I expect things to get worse before they get better - if they ever do.

"Sometimes you need to see the infection to know you're sick"
As we struggle with this as a national problem, coincidentally I've started reading comments from the bookwormroom as a mental break from something I am reading elsewhere, about individual problems that lead you around by the nose for a different issue:
http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/my-porn-addiction
Lots of good, deep comments, it's like reading the postings and comments here.
I know that not everybody here will agree that the problems are in anyway related, even in style, but I was struck by the coincidence of their similarity. And the timing of when I was reading that site and this one.

I saw exactly what you described, Mike Devx, before the election with the one-and-only hardcore lib acquaintance I have. She insisted that things were getting better in her area (near Detroit!) because she saw people out in the stores and restaurants. I am pretty sure she went for Zero a second time. She also vehemently denies that Obamacare has made any difference because that limiting people to part-time policy has been going on forever. I can't decide if she's just stubborn about admitting things or blind. I do think she believes the D party is the same as it was back in the 60s.

Sorry, wandering badly off-topic here, but I just reminded myself of a poem one does not get to quote very often:

Some lucky Thracian has my shield,
 For, being somewhat flurried,
I dropped it by a wayside bush,
 As from the field I hurried;
Thank God, I made it clear away,
 To blazes with the shield!
I'll get another just as good,
When next I take the field.

I'm having a vision. On a high point overlooking the Aegean coast is a small band of brothers, three hundred men pledged to keep Greece free at all costs, and they are facing down an oncoming horde of two million Persians.

As the Persians begin their assault in earnest, King Leonidas addresses his troops. Now, here's the weird part: he bears an uncanny resemblance to John Boehner. "Men, this is an important day. But tomorrow is important, too, as is the day after, and I think next Thursday is some festival up in Macedonia, and I'm sure that's pretty important to them. Now, we are all that stands between these yahoos and our beloved homeland. And so, if we allow ourselves to be defeated, there will be nothing between them and our homeland, and that would be bad. So, we should probably relocate to a different defensive position... I've heard Naples is nice this time of year."

I hope I'm wrong.

Just seeing the image of the 'Iron Lady' made me feel better. She was the one who bucked up Ronald Reagen when he started to fade a bit: "No time to go wobbly", or words similar.

I share your opinion on the impending financial 'reform'. The people have sown the wind, let them reap the whirlwind.

I find myself disagreeing on the will of Americans to accept that the country is broke. In my opinion, the election showed that we have tipped over to a nation of people that covets things over freedom. The sense I got from random people prior to the election was that they would vote Democrat because the Republicans would take things away. No matter that nearly all of their fears were informed by a basic lack of understanding on how this country works: they were barely getting by and those mean old Republicans wanted to make their live worse. Freedom is hard; dependency is easy. And humans, like every other biological organism, will take the easy way if they can.

Sometimes you need to see theinfection to know you're sick

With all due apologies, Book, I'm more cynical these days.

If debt is like an infection that you can see...

After two weeks, he says, "It's not bad, it will get better."
After a month, he says, "It hurts even worse, but I still think it will get better."
Another month passes. Now he's in pain constantly, and he's starting to feel dubious. "But I can take it. I still think that somehow, someway, this is simply going to get better."

Another month passes, and now the pain is too terrible to endure any longer. He decides, finally, to take action, and he sees the doctor.

The doctor tells him, "Two months ago we could have taken action with quite a bit of discomfort. Even one month ago, we could have taken action, but the convalescence would have been very painful. Now, Sir, I am sorry to tell you, that it is too late for action. There is no choice but to amputate, or you will die. There is no other course."

Book, I don't know what "going over the cliff" would actually entail. But, I have become convinced that any agreement that would be possible with Obama and his Merry Trolls will be disastrous. The news today of $1.6T in tax hikes, and undefined spending cuts to follow at some mythical future date, simply illustrate the lack of seriousness. And the arrogance.

So, I tend to think that it is better for the GOP to hold fast, give nothing away, and swallow whatever nasty medicine we must, sooner rather than later. I wrote to my Congressman here in the California "Inland Empire" (I love the sheer pretentiousness of that term, and yes, like many politicians in this part of California he is a Republican) and expressed that opinion. Don't laugh. It is all I know to do.
