Two years ago, when Obama was really leading the charge on punishing oil companies by removing their ability to take the same tax write offs available to all corporations - despite the fact that Obama called them "subsidies" for Big Oil - I recall reading how oil and gas stocks were the only thing keeping most public pension plans afloat. As the rest of the economy tanks, oil and gas stocks will always do well in comparison because there is world wide demand.

I would be more than happy to see universities be forced to divest themselves of what is likely the single highest performing portion of their portfolio. Go one further, have these misguided youths demand that the money from the sale of the oil and gas stocks be reinvested in green energy. I hear there are great investments out their in solar panels and wind farms.

Charles is right. This is a classic Alinsky situation, and these universities should be forced to live by their standards or publicly admit that they're essentially full of nothing but B*LLSH*T. Young conservative students should be leading the charge to force this. True, it goes against general principles to support defunding our energy sector, but some other people or groups will buy those sold stocks, and THOSE people won't be raging leftist liberal hypocrites who undermine us - and seek to destroy us - even as they make their money off of us.

So, yes, force them to divest, and cheer. They can invest their money elsewhere more in accordance with their (supposed) principles. Else they are utter hypocrites and should be exposed as such. Normally conservatives would not support a forced divestiture of anything in the energy sector. This is a case where a higher principle and cause trumps an otherwise normal conservative action.

Well, if they really want to be consistent, they should refuse to have fossil-fuel-derived heat or air conditioning in the dorms.

Although I believe there is a nuclear power plant not too far away. Maybe they could arrange to get their energy from that instead...
