The former mayor of my little town is a Berkeley graduate who worked for Jerry Brown in his first manifestation as California governor in the 1970s. Her husband is a Columbia graduate, her son is a Harvard graduate, and her daughter is a Stanford graduate. This is a family with credentials up the ying yang.

However, at a New Year's Day party a year or so ago I heard her pontificating to some woman that the woman's son, owner of a struggling business, might try applying for an SBA loan. "After all," she assured her listener, "the money is free so he doesn't have to worry too much about paying it back."

Fortunately, there were thinking adults in the room. Three of us shouted spontaneously, "That money is not free!" We explained that in the case of default, we taxpayers would eventually be compelled to pick up the tab.

The wide-eyed look on Her Honor's face told us the gears were spinning madly. "<em>Not</em> free money? Is that possible?" The soundness of her advice was based on being able to wave her hand nonchalantly while reassuring her listener that people like her had thought these things out and knew what they were talking about.

She finally stammered out an agreement of sorts. . ."Of course, I didn't mean that literally." But the point had been made for the other lady. She realized that she was dealing with a woman who, for all her credentials and résumé entries, was clueless.

Greetings:

Having grown up in the Bronx of the '50s and '60s, I feel compelled to once again abuse some of your hospitality.

On the lighter side, back in those days, one of my mother's favorite songs was "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You". If there were to be an updated version, I'm quite sure it would be "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Guards You."
One of my father's life lessons, and there were many, had to do with the effects of wealth or success. His advice was along the lines of when a man stops shining his own shoes and stops opening doors for himself and others, he is in danger of the "camel through the eye of a needle" thing.

On the other end of my mental spectrum, and while I didn't see the broadcast, I'm willing to bet that what happened to the Bronx in those days, and by that I mean the Dresden-lite process it was put through that resulted in large swathes of its "infrastructure" being put to the torch, proved to be not worthy of much in-depth analysis. Similarly, in these days of educational bewonderment, I sure not much schrift was given to how the local Catholic schools seem to do such a good job educating the locals, especially when compared to the much more heavily endowed public school system.
