Work in progress, or not, BW, this is a very good, solid post! :)

My statement has always been that the the US Government has the power to abrogate our Rights, it has absolutely no authority to do so.

The Bill of Rights for me have always been the merest of definitions for a free humanity. The hallmark of this free humanity being the recognition a human heart's innate desire to commune with the salvational presence whose tiny voice only it can hear. As history has shown, this private communion often blossoms first into worship and then into a practiced obedience of faithful following. It is that faithful following through a free society which the first admendent protects not simply the woshipful communion. That faithful following is protected as the freedom of religion and to limited it only to active worship leaves religion in its acts subject to state regulation.

The real issue behind the Declaration of Independence and the subsequent enabling documents, particularly the Bill of Rights, was the protection of the most fragile of minorities. The individual. To varying degrees we now live in a litter of failed democracies, namely blue America. Democracies that have degenerated into mob rule; a ruling coalition of 50 percent plus one that steals from the 50 percent minus one. This, in essence is the Chicago political machine. It is only constrained by the fact that people can still go somewhere else and escape it utter corruption. And, by having the threat of picking up one's marbles to play elsewhere, can force the corrupt self-interest of the Chicago machine to exercise some restraint. Like hitting a mule over the head with a two-by-four.
The lack of Second Amendment rights plays a role in Chicago as well. One of the unremarked aspects of gun ownership is a very different mind set that creates a class of citizens who will challenge power. This isn't the empty boasting of blatant saber rattling, rather a certain peace of mind that comes from the knowledge that is the worst ever comes to pass, you have the means to defend yourself. And, with that comforting thought in mind, you can turn your mind to other solutions to combat the bullies and thugs.
The perverse 'pride' in the Chicago Way and its inherent corruption is rather a resignation on many levels that in those square miles the comprise the city limits of Chicago, there is little to combat the juice of the corrupt majority of the Chicago political machine.
Now, one of its protégées, Obama, is trying to bring to a national scale. He's already got 47%.
