I initially started scouring thrift bookshelves looking for the old Reader's Digest compilation books, for decor and quick, easy reads to pick up anywhere around the house, and I discovered what a gold mine they are thrift store bookshelves, that is)!

My newest "book source"is Dollar Tree and .99 Only! Nothing "vintage", of course. But I got George Obama's book (written with Damien Lewis), Homeland; in fact, I bought several copies to share with family and friends! After reading it, I'm thinking that he'd do a better job as President than his brother -- he has real-world experience and is much wiser about humans as they exist and the way the world works. No utopian is George!

Also got a fabulous photo-book of outhouses, each photo accompanied by a verse. Plus Coffee with Groucho, by Simon Louvish, which is a wonderful introduction to the great man for folks too young to have seen him when he was kicking! For sports fans, there's Bottom of the Ninth by Michael Shapiro, a fascinating look at Branch Rickey's attempt to establish a third major baseball league at the beginning of the '60s, told through the lens of the Series between the Yankees and the Pirates. Well done. I also found a paperback edition of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader the other day....have kept going back looking for the other books in the Narnia series, but no luck, so far.

My favorite Internet book source is Bookfinder.com...and I MUCH prefer the "Classic Search Display", for which you have to check a box at the bottom of the display they show you. Check it out.

Oh, yeah - Goodwill, Salvation Army and Thriftown (local thrift shop) are the go-to choices for my daughter and I. We've found some incredible bargains there, sometimes for nearly new or unworn clothing. I think my daughter's greatest score was at a garage sale, where she got a vintage Doney & Burke handbag (originally $200+) for $5.00. And a pair of Tony Lama cowboy boots for $50 (they usually go for about $400+) at another little second-hand outlet. I think that even if I become fabulously wealthy writing historical fiction, I will still shop at thrift and second-hand stores.
For books - nothing beats Half-Price books, unless it's the 'used' section at Amazon, and the yearly SA-ISD PTA book sale, where all paperbacks are .50, and all hardbound books are $1.00 - no matter if it's a lavish coffee-table book or an kid's picture book. The last couple of years, I've left that venue staggering under the weight of a couple of cartons of books - having spent $20 or so.
But if second-hand becomes trendy, everyone will be doing it. Oh, noes!

I love Goodwill. I don't find many clothes there (I'm a hard size to fit) but I love doing book runs at Goodwill. It's a bit of a potluck -- that is, I can't go in targeting specific books -- but I almost invariably leave with between two and twenty books tucked under my arms. With patience, I've been able to collect all the books of this or that author that I like.

The secret with Goodwill is to find the gems. It's truly like going on a treasure hunt.

My daughter and her friends were doing "Goodwill runs" back in the '90s and early 2000s when they were in high school and college.

I was so proud of them!! They recommended one place where I went and found my very cool leather jacket for $25.00 (plus $38.00 for cleaning, I think).

I don't think they listen(ed) to this group or this kind of music (although what do I know?), but I love the mindset...our culture would be a lot better off with a bit more of it.
