If ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise — especially when the subject is Islam.

Drilling down through this, I came to this great comment:

Donald R. McClarey says:

“I guess my overarching problem with all of them, and most atheists in fact, is that they’re far more avid scriptural literalists than most Christians and certainly most Catholics are.”
Bingo. We see that in the atheist trolls who come here and attempt to roll out their “proof texts” that they use against Evangelicals and are stunned to learn that Catholics have a completely different way of looking at Scripture. The bone ignorance of Catholicism is often deep and wide among most atheists I have encountered, including those who claim to be ex-Catholics.

One of the problems in defending the Catholic Christian faith against non-Catholic Christians is that there are 30,000 brands of Protestantism, each with it’s own version of Sola Scriptura. It’s like having each soldier in a large battle like the invasion of Normandy needs to be trained to fight one and only one particular enemy soldier, and the guy next to him trained to fight one and only one different particular soldier. If you wind up facing the wrong enemy soldier, all your training is useless. If your landing boat landed at the wrong place, whether five feet away or an entire beach away, you are just out of luck.

Other problems: Catholics and Protestants are separated by a common tongue with different dictionaries. And most dissenting Catholics and former Catholics never have known what Catholicism is; they only know what other dissenting and former Catholics have told them about Catholics.

Michelle, the Everything Else Czar.

Who knew that Michelle Obama had so much in common with ancient Sparta? Following her fitness program is now a “patriotic obligation.” Considering that Sparta was a, well, spartan, warlike, slave state, I’m not sure I like this. It’s one thing if people want to be physically fit (as I do). It’s quite another thing when the state makes it a civic obligation that, ultimately, as a civic obligation, will be enforced using all the state’s power.

We could adopt Orwell's all hands physical fitness program, complete with in-home monitoring, the one he proposed in 1984.

"Every single one of these kids is special. They're all special. Every child I meet has the potential to contribute something amazing..It’s up to us to bring out the very best in all -- do you hear me -- all of our young people..."

Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: Which is another way of saying no one is.

I have no problem with Michelle Obama's (tritely worded) enthusiasm for having American children succeed. I do not support her quest to coerce schools, parents, food manufacturers, grocers, and restaurants into "supporting children" in the manner she dictates. After reading that article I'm left wondering how soon before there are mandatory exercise requirements for public school children. For the children!!
