Obamacare: Come join the welfare state

When I read John McWhorter’s superb Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America, I learned something I hadn’t known before. Outside of the Jim Crow South, in the years leading up to the Civil Rights movement, black people were very slowly, but still steadily, moving into the middle class. They had stable nuclear families, with working fathers. The Civil Rights movement should have accelerated this trend by removing barriers to black employment.

But something happened at the same time as the Civil Rights movement, and that “something” was Johnson’s Great Society. Burdened by white guilt, and holding welfare checks, well-meaning whites fanned out through black communities and told black men to stop working. Black men had been slaves for too long, they said, and it was time for the government to pay them back. When the men spoke of pride, and manliness, and responsibility, they were told not to let their pride stand in the way of getting what was “owed” them.

The result was inevitable: black men quickly became useful only for sex and procreation. The government stepped in as the family breadwinner. Women with children didn’t have to rely on a man who might do everything from drinking and beating her to leaving the toilet seat up, and men were able to get sex without the burden of fatherhood. Blacks became the only minority group in America that was perpetually mired in the lowest societal echelons. This was not the case for other, equally reviled groups, such as Irish Catholics, Jews, Italians, Asians, or the first generation of Hispanics. (It is somewhat true for the current generation of Hispanics, who have also been seduced into believing that the state should be the pater familias.) Asians who immigrated after the 1960s probably avoided the welfare trap only because they came from Communist countries and had experienced a surfeit of government “largesse.”

If you want to see the end result of the hard-driving government effort to place blacks on welfare, you need only see this video (which I call “All attitude; no gratitude”):

Now that I’ve given you some background into the scourge of a government’s unconstrained push to get citizens onto welfare, you are ready to read Zombie’s article about the advice the San Francisco Comical, er, Chronicle, offers to people trying to figure out how to deal with Obamacare.  It’s time to be very, very afraid for America.

“men quickly became useful only for sex and procreation. The government stepped in as the family breadwinner.”
Take a look at the stats on single motherhood. The rise across the board of single motherhood in all demographics is accelerating.
It is a sad fact of “modern” progressive society that father’s are de -valued.  If you are a man, why would you marry now?  If you are a woman, it certainly is not only valid, but celebrated decision to be a single mother.  Why bother with a husband, especially when many of your peers haven’t.

It is with the rise of the Great Society that we start coming across the “angry black man”. It was not enough that he had to contend with the hardships of making a living he now had to fight an army of social workers evaluating his every word and action for his own good.  If he realizes that it is the social worker who was advancing economically he is then labeled as “trapped” and unappreciative of education. It took college educated blacks like Jesse Jackson, Charles Barron, etc. to really sell white European intellectual supremacy to blacks and they have done their job all too well.
The even sadder part is that the Left was able to use the expanded welfare state to sharpen its narratives against anyone who have values other than their own. Any religious group or other grouping that they don’t make inroads in they use the same playbook on. Welfare as the carrot and rhetoric about being primitive as the stick.  We are all angry black men now.

I was looking around for1984 on YouTube when I came across a BBC version of the novel. It was obvious that the producers hadn’t much of a budget—the sets were cheesy and the special effects were few. But typically British good acting and paying attention to the central points that Orwell was trying to make made it an interesting version.
One of the things I noticed was that the producers were easily able to find depressing scenes of urban squalor as the backdrop to Winston Smith’s forbidden forays into the prole parts of London. I began thinking that it is not very hard to find similar scenes in America—Detroit, Newark, Richmond, CA, parts of Los Angeles. The people who live in such places may not like them, but they are used to them. At best, they are only dimly aware that maybe this isn’t the way things should be. But like the proles in 1984, the most they can do is grumble as they consume their cheap liquor and abundant pornography.
Like 1984, enough resources—welfare, EBT cards, contraceptives, easy abortion—will be diverted to the proles, and some of them will be drafted (raymondjelli’s “angry black men”) to serve in the endless race wars that the elites conjure up as distractions. Most resources will go to the people at the top, to doubleplusgood doublethinkers like Pelosi and Princess Moonface Warren, who even as they extend a helping hand to the darker sorts they so fiercely advocate for, will make sure that their dusky beneficiaries never quite get out of the hole.

Charles Martel– I rather thought that whoever came up with the name “Julia” for the Obama Campaign female cartoon character had an, uh, interesting sense of humor. I thought it spoke VOLUMES.

Lee – never mistake stupidity for motive.  You actually think anyone connected with that crap is literate?  Not bloody likely.

Democrats never forget a serf, slave, or peasant that betrayed their expectations. Never.
They will always come looking for revenge with a noose, white robes, or a police badge.

“Black men had been slaves for too long, they said, and it was time for the government to pay them back. ”
It was time for the government to put the slaves back where they belong. It was wrong of the Democrat masters to pay for your living expenses. It is correct for the government to do so.
Well intentioned? As if I can believe that.
Everything you see in the Obama regime, was Always true of the Left. They just hid it and people looked the other way. Nothing Obama has done, is something his predecessors lacked the ability to replicate.

Lee and jj, your comments remind me of Faye Dunway’s famous answer to Jack Nicholson’s query in Chinatown: “She’s my sister.” =SLAP= “She’s my daughter.” =SLAP= “She’s my sister.” =SLAP=

Here’s the “evidence” for why I don’t believe in their “good intentions”.
The sessions of the December National Committee were notable for their long-winded,long-spun-out, and fantastic justification of the line of “self-determination of the Negro in the black belt.” Only the intelligence and patience of Negro leaders in America have made possible resistance to this mischievous theory which was contrived by Stalin and was now unleashed by Foster. Briefly told, it is the theory that the Negroes in the South form a nation, a subjugated nation with the desire to become a free one, and that the Communists are to give them all assistance. The Party proposed to develop the national aspirations of the Negro people so they would rise up and establish themselves as a ation with the right to secede from the United States. It was a theory not for the benefit of the Negroes but to spur strife, and to use the American Negro in the world communist propaganda campaign to win over the colored people of the world. Ultimately, the Communists proposed to use them as instruments in the revolution to come in the United States.-School of Darkness, time stamp around 1940-1950s

This is what the Commies and Leftists were working on before Johnson’s Great Society. Do people still want to believe in their “good intentions”? How long before you go bankrupt believing in their good intentions here.
