Why a healthy society should resist the new generation of gender-neutral pronouns

You can cut off Thomas Beatie's breasts and give him hormones to grow a beard, but he's not a pregnant male, he's a bearded, breast-less pregnant female

You can cut off Thomas Beatie’s breasts and give him hormones to grow a beard, but he’s not a pregnant male; he’s a bearded, breast-less pregnant female

I understand that language changes.  We don’t speak like this anymore:

Whan that aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of march hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;

Or like this:

Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf
Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark,
Root of hemlock digg’d i’ the dark,
Liver of blaspheming Jew,
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Silver’d in the moon’s eclipse,
Nose of Turk and Tartar’s lips,
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron,
For the ingredients of our cauldron.

Or even like this:

Look at the gams on that dame — and that chassis.  Hot diggity-dog!  She’s the bee’s knees.  This sheik wants to spend some time with that sheba.

Nevertheless, fossil that I am, I find disturbing the fact that the young generation is trying to define away biological reality.  On the same day that we learn (yet again) that men and women don’t only have different hardware (that is, their physical attributes), but also an entirely different operating system (their brains are wired differently), Breitbart reports that the younger generation is trying to introduce gender-neutral pronouns into the English language:

For those who revere clarity in the English language, be prepared; there are a number of young people who are now preferring to eschew the two traditional pronouns for human beings, “he” and “she,” and choosing instead to identify their gender by such terms as “they,” “ze,” sie,” “e,” “ou,” and “ve.”

This may come as a surprise to these politically-correct, non-heteronormative statists, but English already has a gender-neutral pronoun: IT.  Of course, calling someone who is neither male nor female an “it” seems to dehumanize them, so I can see why activists insist on change.  I’m just not willing to go where they’re going with this type of assault, not only on the English language, but on reality.

Take Chaz Bono, for example, someone who seems like quite a nice person.  Chaz has female plumbing under the skin and, thanks to surgery and hormones, a vaguely male appearance at a superficial level (scanty facial hair, no breasts, and goodness knows what external plumbing).  Chaz doesn’t want to be called “she,” but it’s denying reality to call Chaz “he.”  When I write about Chaz, I avoid pronouns, which allows me to respect Chaz’s choice without doing damage to reality or to the English language.

Incidentally, Chaz has come in for some flack lately from “Stephen Ira,” who was born the daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning.  As did Chaz, Stephen took hormones and had surgery to change a female body into one resembling a male body.  As far as Stephen is concerned, Chaz is trouble because Chaz actually clings to antiquated notions about “male” and “female.”  According to Chaz (and I think accurately), the mismatch between a body’s gender and a brain’s gender identification is a form of birth defect.  Stephen took umbrage, writing that Stephen does not feel that, in Stephen’s own case, this mismatch was a birth defect.  Worse, says Stephen, Chaz “is a trans man who seems to believe that his female-assignedness and socialization makes him immune from being a misogynist, and he is manifestly wrong.”  So there!!

I have nothing but sympathy for people whose sense of self, which comes from the brain, is so at odds with the body attached to that brain.  Some people with this disconnect get eating disorders, some people get disfiguring plastic surgery, and some people alter their body’s external appearance to bring it in line with the message their brain sends to them.  While I don’t applaud those with body dysmorphia who starve themselves or throw-up, or who turn themselves into monstrous caricatures through surgery, I don’t see a problem with using surgery and meds to create the illusion of a different gender (although studies show that happiness is not an inevitable sequel to surgery to alter gender appearance).

The fact that I support the fact that some people people take proactive steps to improve their own reality does not mean that we as a society must deny reality.  Denying reality, however, is precisely what this bizarre gender-neutral language is trying to do.  As a percentage of the whole population, there are very few boys who will be girls and girls who will be boys.  The rest of us are pretty clearly round pegs in round holes and square pegs in square holes, and our English language accurately reflects this actual, rather than politically-correct, reality.

Someone e-mailed Rush this morning about this pronoun issue….he pointed out that in two languages he speaks – both Spanish and Polish – EVERY noun has gender, and this must be recognized in the proper word choice.  From my experience in Spanish and French, I can confirm this….and it’s one of the difficulties of learning these languages.  There are irregularities that drive you CRAZY!!

This same guy was now living in Indonesia, and in that language there are NO gender-specific pronouns whatever.  They use the same one for everybody.

Of course, as he pointed out, the level of misogyny, the amount of equality – in fact, whatever metric the language police in this country wish to use – is not affected by the indeterminacy or specificity of the words used.

I realize that this is not going to affect the convictions of the totalitarians on the left, but for those who are open to being convinced of the truth of reality, it might help.

I wouldn’t be too worried about some dimwit Millennials finding yet another distraction to entertain their endlessly bored selves. I think most people their age will see it for the pathetic affectation that it is and just roll their eyes at the whole tempest-in-a-teapot phenomenon.

What will really pull these young fools out of their reverie is the upcoming existential crisis they’ll soon face. Abroad, China is trying to exploit our Coward-in-Chief’s weakness, and is moving to challenge American power in the Eastern Hemisphere. And now that Jew hater Obama has delivered an OK to Iran to develop an atomic bomb, the chances of a great Mideastern war that could spread to Europe and America have been heightened considerably.

Internally, Obama has pretty much kicked the US economy and political system to the precipice. A few more high crimes and misdemeanors, and job-killing edicts later and the Millennials are going to have to make up their minds: Do they want to wrangle over silly pronouns or do they want to advance on Washington, DC and burn down that sorry-ass excuse for a capital?

My position has always been that reality comes first. We must bow to it, not vice-versa. And if you feel like a man in a woman’s body, too bad for you. You’re a woman, so get used to it.

BTW, there’s also the stink of self-indulgent navel gazing about this. A sort of bored solipsism that disgusts me.

This is one of the most ignorant posts I have read in a while, and I really couldn’t help but try and work out what on Earth you think you’re talking about when you clearly don’t know very much.
One of the things I find strange is you claim to accept that language changes as new words are required, and as time goes on, but then refuse to accept the changes going on in the current time. You know, gender neutral pronouns are not even just for people who don’t fit into the gender binary; they are useful for when the gender of someone is best left unrevealed, or does not need to be stated (‘Someone’s at the door, and they want you to sign something’), or even just getting closer to gender equality (without using a specific pronoun ‘she’ or ‘he’, people are free of biases they would have had they known the sex of the person).  Did you know a group of kids in a school in Baltimore created their own gender neutral pronoun, and not specifically to refer to a person who doesn’t fit the gender binary? They just noticed a gap in the English language and filled it.
On another note, you seem to claim that biology is biology, and there’s only male and female (in humans, and I’m not going to go into how that’s not true for other animals). I would like to know what you think makes someone male or female. Is it their chromosomes? Men are XY and women are XX, and that’s that? Well what about people who appear to have all female characteristics (breasts, vagina, feminine features), but who have XY chromosomes? What about people who appear to have all male characteristics, but who have XX chromosomes? What about those people who have XXX, or XXYY or XXXY or XXXXY? What about people who only have a single X chromosome? What about people who have some cells with XX chromosomes and some with XY?
Perhaps it’s genitals then? But there are people who are born with genitals that don’t match the general image of male and female genitals. There are those that are born with a mixture of the two.
Well, perhaps you’d rescind your previous statement and claim that it’s hormones. But then how much estrogen makes a women, and how much testosterone makes a man? What about those people who have hormone imbalances that mean it’s not so clear cut?
I find it hard to think of any other excuses you could come up with. And I think at the very least, you have to admit that there is more to sex than just male and female.
Oh also, I almost forgot. You said that males and females have brains wired differently. I will just add that trans people (like Chaz) have brain scans that do not match the gender they are assigned at birth (their physical sex), but are closer to the gender that they want to transition to. Make of that what you will. (Just kidding, it means you’re wrong.)

The idea that gender has a brain scan related to it, is why zombies obey the cult of Science and their world is called Obama’s world.

These tools wouldn’t know what a brain scan is if a doctor showed it to them.

@accountforthings:   When you come on so aggressive and rude right away, do you expect that’s going to tempt people to read what you have to say?  Why would you think that?  You need to modify your approach, even (or maybe especially) to people with whom you disagree.

It appears to me that there are males and females, and then damaged (or imperfect) males and females in a number of categories.  I find Chaz Bono’s (and others’) situation quite sad, and I would not be so rude as to get into an argument with her about hers.  But she is clearly a female whose mental image of herself has been messed up in some way when she was young and she’s coping with that at this point.   Someone’s (even very strong) feelings about what they are doesn’t trump the biology of the situation.

Homosexuals and their lobby lawyer activists don’t want love in relationships. That’s not their goal.
Without love, it cannot be seen. Easier to make people into slaves when they have never known love.

I respect and recognize only individuals, and not the authority of some evil organized for the Left, mafia mob.

I love the expression “gender equality!” I have no idea what it means, and the people who use it don’t have any idea either, but it sounds so good. Who isn’t for gender equality? Who doesn’t want men to be able to give birth, or women to be able to become Navy Seals? Who isn’t for men making up 50 percent of all elementary school teachers? Sure, men are more prone to engage in rape than women, but gender egalitarians know that rape is simply a socially constructed form of behavior. (By the way, by mentioning the sexes of a rapist and rapee we are succumbing to gender biases that color our impressions of the two people involved. True gender equality would make their sexes immaterial.)

This is what I love about the left’s magical-thinking approach to language: Abracadabra, we change human nature by pretending that we own it. If we tell Chaz Bono enough times that she’s a man, why, presto, change-o, she’s a man! That kind of power over reality is very alluring. No wonder why so many people fall for it.

Some of us don’t care what the hole looks like, we merely burn it all down to ash. Then everyone is Equal Under Death and that’s a lovely thing, isn’t it.
