Quick links for Tuesday night (and Open Thread)

Victorian posy of pansiesI have to return to my perpetual motion machine, but before I do, I wanted to throw out a few quick links to things I thought were interesting.

Second Amendment supporters cheered when the 9th Circuit (the 9th Circuit!!!) ruled that counties cannot concealed-carry licenses by reserving to themselves the power to determine whether someone is in genuine fear for his life.  The Marin County Sheriff finds this ruling offensive, primarily because no one ever schooled him on the Second Amendment:

Marin County Sheriff-Coroner Doyle criticized the ruling, saying it “essentially eliminates the authority of local sheriffs and chiefs of police to establish a ‘good cause’ standard for granting or denying concealed weapons permits that is reflective of the individualized community standards where they serve.” Doyle said he is a “strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but believe this latest court ruling unreasonably expands the scope of that constitutional guarantee, enabling people not only to arm themselves for protection inside their homes and businesses, but also in areas that are open to the public where possession of a concealed firearm has until now been a crime.”

Apparently Sheriff Doyle’s copy of Second Amendment reads as follows:  “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, provided that this militia is made up solely of government employed or authorized citizens, the right of the people to keep and bear arms inside their homes if they first get government permission based upon a bureaucrat’s determination that they might be in danger shall not be infringed.”

Me?  I think that’s a pretty lousy version of the Second Amendment and, thankfully, it’s not the real deal.  If Doyle and others would like to have the Second Amendment changed, they need to follow the Constitution’s amendment process, not simply misread the actual document.

Sometimes statements just demand a snarky, sarcastic response.  Take for example President Obama’s boastful statement that the stimulus worked, never mind the job-market contraction, sneaking inflation, rising food and fuel costs, etc.  Certainly Obama couldn’t care less about these picayune issues, for he said “Anybody who says we can’t compete when it comes to clean energy technologies like solar and wind, they have had to eat those words.”  (Emphasis mine.)  To which the obvious riposte is, yeah, and words are all that they’ve got left to eat, what with no jobs, no money, no fuel and no food.  I was going to say “What a maroon,” but Bugs Bunny’s favorite insult seems too mild when compared to this man’s arrogance and insensitivity.

I’m not making it up about rising fuel prices.  Dan Greenfield (aka Sultan Knish) has a long, depressing post about the way the green energy movement, which has enriched the Leftist nomenklatura is leaving increasing numbers of people in the First World cold and hungry, with periodic bouts of death thrown in for good measure.

Doug Ross has a cartoon panel that eviscerates Leftist thinking in three frames.

You know who would have loved your Sheriff Doyle’s version of the 2nd Amendment, Bull Conner.  I’m sure there were others as well.

Sheriff-coroner?  In Marin one guy does both jobs?  Am I the only one who finds that the tiniest bit weird?

This is interesting.  The Ike military-industrial complex speech had a bit extra in it.  A bit about the danger of universities as power centers
The Forgotten Part of Ike’s Speech
    What Ike actually said:
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

Doyle’s just a goon and dog of the Leftist Regime. Why he thinks we should listen to him, I have no idea. Other people call police “pigs” in order to dehumanize and other a separate social organization that people fear or dislike.
I have no particular need for this type of social reinforcement. Because unless you can demonstrate you are a human to me, you are not. Not to me. Not ever. There are specific, objective, standards to being human. A lot of the social band wagon type conditioning weak people use, such as pigs and other terms in war to Other the enemy so that it makes it easier to kill and pull the trigger, are inferior methods of conditioning.

Like some other people who I can name for California, Doyle wants to keep the Oakland black population down. So he wants to control the guns and keeps the thugs out. The thug, wants to keep the thugs away. One Democrat thug wants to keep another Democrat thug away because the whites pay him to do that in Democrat fiefdom land.
The authority of Leftist Regimes, the authority of Leftist evil, means nothing. It is illegitimate power. It is monstrous power. It’s not that complicated.
Why do the “authorities” get to tax farm us to death while they stay safe in their Democrat fiefdoms? Why do their allies in the Leftist alliance get to create crime in Oakland and farm out the lives of blacks, so that means the rest of us must disarm in public for the benefit of the Democrat thug corps?

Thinking about this a moment in somewhat more serious vein, the old Sheriff-Coroner manages to miss the point completely and favor the world with nothing more than a display of his own ignorance.
He says the ruling: “essentially eliminates the authority of local sheriffs and chiefs of police to establish a ‘good cause’ standard for granting or denying concealed weapons permits…” and blah, blah, blah.  Perceptive of him to notice that, it must have been the Coroner half of his brain talking.  Yes, Dr. Doyle (I presume you’re an MD, I never knew a Coroners who wasn’t) the ruling does precisely that, as does the Second Amendment itself.  Oddly enough when Madison and his gang were writing the thing it never occurred to them to grant extra-special powers to sheriffs and chiefs of police – not even to polymaths such as yourself.
The fact that he could simultaneously refer to himself as a strong supporter of the Second Amendment at the same time as he objects to himself and his judgment – such as it may be – being removed from the loop simply illustrates, in neon, that he doesn’t understand the Second Amendment any better than Holder or Jerry Brown understand the job of Attorney General.
So my question becomes: where in the hell do we get these people?  These stupendously, gloriously, ignorant people?

He may or may not be an MD. Coroners vary from place to place in the US, depending on the state. In some places, it’s just an elected position. Where I grew up, for the longest time, the Coroner was the local funeral director.  I have no idea what they did in the event of a murder–presumably called in someone who knew what they were doing!
Usually, a Medical Examiner or a Forensic Pathologist (who are MD’s) do the actual work of autopsies, etc. The coroner signs (or his office rubber stamps) the death certificates. The coronor may or may not preside over inquests (again, varies among different jurisdictions), and may even overule an ME or FP (again, varies) on the manner of death. (Generally, though, not the cause.) My current county of residence has a coroner who’s just a guy from the sheriff’s office who won the election. NOT a doctor–just a camo wearing, tobacco-chewing, re-re-re-redneck.

    CPM go uuuppppp!
It’s really not that bad, though.  Just a bit *confining*, eh?  Hope you don’t have to pee during that timeframe.

The Marin Sheriff’s Department runs the county jail, serves warrants, and engages in occasional Negro, Mexican, and White Trash Control in the county’s unincorporated areas. Doyle conflates the lawless antics of his differently colored and same-colored vassals with the ability of law-abiding citizens in Marin’s incorporated communities to be able to carry a weapon around without shooting everyone who comes into sight.
The guy is so used to having a monopoly on licit violence that he can’t stand the thought of losing his purpose in life, which is to dress purty and pretend he performs a service that any of us would miss if it disappeared.

The Sheriff they voted in is typical and expected of Marin, where concealed carry permits are in the tens compared to the upper 90s or hundreds of other counties.
In their view, nobody they know owns or carrys a concealed weapon around them, certainly not in the streets and certainly not if they aren’t deputized.
They should have thought about their individual town’s independence when they supported the Obama Regime. Now they want us to think that we should fix our safeties to their local policies, as if that makes sense. The crime rampant in the cities are the result of Leftist evil. I, for one, am not going to listen to another Leftist minion that benefits from the oppression and tax farming of humans on this Earth.
The sheriff here has yet to convince me he is a real person, that has real human free will, that is exercising local law enforcement peace instead of Leftist commands to disarm the rodents.
