I was thinking about ways to explain things to kids. I think just describing things the government does (i.e. things the Democrat party causes the government to do) in simple terms is sufficient. Basically, think of the federal government as some guy, let’s call him Sam.
-Sam makes $26,000 per year but spends $37,500. He puts all his debt onto credit cards or takes out various loans. He currently has debts of $170,000. Sam has increased his spending every year, whether he made more money or not. If you suggest to Sam that he needs to spend less he gets very angry and says a lot of mean things about you.
-Sam feels bad for people who are down on their luck. Despite all his debts, he gives a lot of money to poor folks. However, Sam doesn’t pay attention to whether those people wasted his money or not. Every month he gives money to whoever asks, even if they spent all the money he gave them last month on iPhones and candy.
-Your neighbor offers you $5 an hour to mow his lawn. You accept and you’re about to start mowing, but Sam comes along and tells your neighbor that he can’t have you mow his lawn you unless he pays you $10 an hour. Your neighbor is sad, but he doesn’t want to pay $10 an hour so he mows his own lawn. Sam tells you that he helped you by keeping your neighbor from taking advantage of you, even though you were happy with $5 an hour and you won’t get any money at all now.
Those are the ones that jumped out at me. What do you think?

I think those are excellent, especially the last one. They’re the stuff of viral emails and Facebook posts.

“unless he pays you $10 an hour”
And 2 dollars go to Sam for the union protection fee.

      The “Sam” example.
Actually, Sam will insist that someone who doesn’t have a lawn to mow buy the lawn mower and then maintain the landscaping.

Mencken was of a kind with other cynics like Sinclair Lewis and Mark Twain. They are masters at exposing human folly. While great at tearing down certain features, they aren’t so good at replacing them with something uplifting.

  • Danny Lemieux

Matt_SE, the difference between them was that Twain excelled at using humor, Mencken excelled at using snark and Lewis was just an angry man.

This includes receiving help from other nations.

BREAKING NEWS: Appearing at a press conference this morning, Sam announced the successful completion of elective surgery, and wishes henceforth to be known as “Julia.”  Pressed on whether that should have been the highest priority for someone with her finances, Julia replied that it was the right thing to do regardless, saying, “We are all Julias now.”  Furthermore, she added, cost is not a factor, because she has more than one credit card, and she can pay each off with another.
