Benjamin Wittes and witless logic about Trump

June 26, 2019 by Bookworm Leave a Comment

The Benjamin Wittes “I believe” tweetstorm about Trump, intended to expose conservative “Doublethink,” instead exposed Leftist irrationality and ignorance.

Wittes Impeachment Trump Derangement SyndromeThe anti-Trump blogosphere, both Leftists and #NeverTrumpers, is excited about an endless series of tweets from Benjamin Wittes all intended, in a sarcastic way, to challenge Trump and his supporters. Before I go further, some background on Wittes: He is a Brookings Institution Senior Fellow who graduated from Oberlin and is currently co-director of Harvard Law School’s Brookings Project on Law and Security. In other words, he’s been marinated in Leftism since he hit college (and, given that he went to a non-Orthodox Jewish school in New York City, probably for his entire life).

Okay. Now back to those tweets. It’s apparent from reviewing the tweets that what Wittes is trying to do is show that conservatives have entered the Orwellian world of “doublethink”:

Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

In fact, what Wittes has managed to do is show that Leftists are incapable of even “singlethink” — that is, the ability to look at two related pieces of information and recognize that they can easily and logically exist simultaneously in the same universe. For example, I can simultaneously believe that cows produce milk to feed their young and that humans consume and benefit from milk. As you can see, these two apparently disparate thoughts — cows milk is cow food but it’s also human food — manage to exist in the same universe without creating a logical black hole that destroys all rational thought.

With that in mind, how about we take a look at the Wittes tweet thread (which I’ve rendered in plain text):

I believe the president. I have always believed him.
‘I believe the president’: GOP stands by Trump on sexual assault allegation
Republicans are dismissing E. Jean Carroll’s accusation and still sticking with Trump.

Yeah, I stand by President Trump too on this one. I’m not going to analyze it here, though, because Wittes raises the subject again, below, and that’s where I address more fully the sordid sexual allegations Lefties like to raise against Trump.

I believed him when he said he wanted to ban Muslims from entering the United States. And I believe him now when he says his travel ban has nothing to do with religious discrimination.

In other words, Wittes is saying it’s impossible simultaneously to believe that Trump wants to keep Muslims out of America while not discriminating against Muslims; i.e., it’s doublethink! Except that to anyone who pays attention to facts, there’s nothing “doublethinky” at all about the fact that there is a segment of Islam that is cheerfully dedicated to Western destruction.

As it is, Wittes seems to have sat out the last few decades, when extremist members of the Islamic faith: [Read more…]

Trump in Saudi Arabia: politely speaking the truth about Islamic extremism

May 21, 2017 by Bookworm 8 Comments

Saudi Arabia respects Donald Trump because he promises to partner with it against Islamic extremism, without trying to change the Sunni Arab nations.

From the first moment Trump’s plane landed in Saudi Arabia, things were different:

Trump greeted with respect in Saudi Arabia no bows

Ignore those who try to say that, once off the tarmac, Trump finally did bow to the King of Saudi Arabia, just as Obama did. What the footage actually shows is that the tall Trump stooped to receive an honor from the shorter Saudi king (who was seated next to an unveiled Melania). Trump’s was no act of obeisance:

There was also the fact that King Salman, the aged ruler of Saudi Arabia, shook hands with Melania, an unveiled woman:

Melania greeted with handshake in Saudi Arabia

Perhaps even more amazing was that the leadership in Saudi Arabia sat with and spoke to an unveiled Jewish woman:

Ivanka in Saudi Arabia -- Jewish and unveiled

So what’s going on? It was Obama who had the love affair with Islam but in Saudi Arabia, it’s Trump and his family who are being feted with tremendous respect. Here’s what I think is happening: [Read more…]

[VIDEOS] Islam is the problem — and we need to say so

June 18, 2016 by Bookworm 7 Comments

Obama fears naming IslamIslam is the problem. This does not mean that all Muslims are the problem.  In fact, most aren’t.  But those who owe fealty to a literalist interpretation of Mohammed’s words are a problem, there are lots of them, and we need to name them and then destroy them.

Both these videos address naming Islam, and I urge you to watch both of them. Then, the next time you hear someone repeat Obama’s vacuous editorializing about guns (bad) versus the enemy who shall not be named (good at heart), you’ll have a response ready.

The first video is from an Israeli rabbi (American born, I suspect), who rips apart Obama’s vacuous temper tantrum against Trump for the latter’s having dared to say that Obama’s refusal to name the enemy is a terribly disturbing phenomenon:

The Bookworm Beat 2-2-15 — A quick rundown before Monday really kicks in

February 2, 2015 by Bookworm 13 Comments

Woman writingThe expression that “when it rains, it pours” has taken on a bit of significance in my life. As you know, after a hiatus from working, brought about in part by the recession hitting my clients and in part by the demands of an elderly parent and a household, I took a break from legal work. I went back to work last month when my oldest and favorite client needed my help. Then, on Saturday, two clients from whom I haven’t heard in years (2008 and before) both called me looking for help. Since I have the self-employed person’s ethos of never saying “no” when work comes calling, I said yes.

Before I dive in mountains of rather dull legal work, here are some interesting links:

The bar is set very high for being called an Islamic radical

In a biting post, Sultan Knish points out that it takes a lot to be called an Islamic radical. And when I say it takes a lot, I mean an awful, awful lot — because, for the most part, the radicals engage in precisely the same behavior one sees in Islamic nations around the world that aren’t considered “radical” at all. And then, when a group such as ISIS pushes the envelope, going beyond even what UN member states would do, Obama and Kerry insist that these groups aren’t Islamic at all. As Humpty Dumpty understood, whoever controls the definitions of words wins.
