Buttigieg’s rise highlights the travesty of the Democrat field

December 12, 2019 by Bookworm Leave a Comment

Pete Buttigieg is an intelligent man who has accomplished much in 37 years, is a doctrinaire Leftist, and is totally unqualified to be president.

Pete ButtigiegWhen Trump first rode down the staircase in 2015 to announce his candidacy, the media considered him the biggest joke around. They gave him hundreds of hours of free air time because they thought it would be the best thing ever — for Hillary — if Trump were to become the Republican nominee. At the same time, large numbers of conservatives (myself included), where occupying “anyone but Trump” territory.

There was no doubt, of course, that Trump was a master showman and a truly charismatic speaker, something that caused Mark Steyn to realize as early as January 2015 that Trump could win.

Showmanship and charisma. They’re real and they’re matter. Moreover, Trump had then, as he continues to have, a genuine belief in America and Americans that couldn’t be faked.

But in the beginning, Trump also had something else to offer, something that most in the media ignored, but that the American voters valued; namely, Trump had vast executive experience. Paul Solotaroff, writing in September 2015 for Rolling Stone, was one of those who “got it.” In an article entitled “Taking Trump Seriously,” Solotaroff, after noting Trump’s loopy style coupled with his razor-sharp brain, pointed out something Democrat wished to forget (h/t Don Surber):

In all the hysteria, however, what’s often missed are the qualities that brought Trump here. You don’t do a fraction of what he’s done in life — dominate New York real estate for decades, build the next grand Xanadus for the super-rich on the far shores of Dubai and Istanbul, run the prime-time ratings table for more than 10 years and earn a third (or sixth) fortune at it – without being immensely cunning and deft, a top-of-the-food-chain killer.

Yeah. Trump’s good at business. Really good. Moreover, he didn’t make money the new way, by pushing or facilitating information (Bloomberg or the dot com guys), but the old fashioned way by building brick and mortar things. There’s nothing ephemeral about what Trump did, and it took a lot of knowledge, wheeling and dealing, and political acumen at home and abroad. [Read more…]

The Bookworm Beat 11/20/16 — Life in Trump’s America

November 20, 2016 by Bookworm 4 Comments

3265900078_9828f26d02_American-flagI’m back from my cruise, but not yet home, so this will be a smaller than usual round-up culling some of the best posts I’ve seen since recently about life in Trump’s America. Typing on a teeny keyboard slows me down….

The temperature in the Left’s fever swamps is rising.. I don’t need to repeat here the puerile behavior to which Mike Pence was subjected when he went to see Hamilton, nor do I need to repeat Pence’s classy response. You already know that.

What you might not know is that Pence’s appearance at the show was all part of a deep Trump plot to humiliate the Progressive Left by creating a situation in which the “others” in this new bigoted, racist, misogynistic, transphobic, and homophobic America would be forced to engage in behavior distasteful to the aforementioned bigots, racists, misogynists, etc.

Yup. No fooling.  That dastardly Trump outwitted America’s most elite brains.  I know this because I read it at the GQ website (and didn’t that used to be a snobby men’s fashion magazine?). Why else would a man that the Left believes is on the verge of euthanizing gays to end their evil ways even bother to attend a Broadway show?

Vice presidential debate open thread

October 4, 2016 by Bookworm 6 Comments

Veep candidatesWhew! Having watched some of the vice presidential debate, we now know what happened to the leftover amphetamines from Hillary’s first debate night, when they were put to good use propping her up for 90 minutes. We know that Hillary swallowed some of the extras, or else she couldn’t have rendered her “why aren’t I 50 points ahead?” masterpiece, but some were definitely set aside for tonight’s Democrat performance at the debate.

If you were to take Chip or Dale, of Disney chipmunk fame, and feed them a meal of coffee and amphetamines, they’d sound just like Tim Kaine. The guy is so wired I’m surprised his skin still fits him. Also, and this is a mean comment on his looks, but I became weirdly fascinated by his jaw and mouth. They look like something one would see on a ventriloquist’s dummy. The flapping jaw and smile that never reaches his eyes are weirdly disconnected, in an almost psychopathic way. I would not want to meet this man in a dark alley. He’s Joe Biden, only more vicious.

Poor Governor Pence has been left trying to thread a very fine needle: Make his campaign points or quiet the pit bull puppy savaging his ankles just so that he (Pence) can get a word in edgewise. Worse, Pence is not being helped by the breathy bimbo with the false eyelashes (hard to believe, but she’s apparently the moderator) who keeps cutting Pence off while giving Kaine more time for his sound byte attacks.

To the extent that Pence has been allowed to speak, he’s made sense. Too often, though, Kaine has spoken over him, babbling incomprehensible and repetitive insults, making it impossible to hear what Pence is saying. If Kaine were in my kindergarten class, I’d tell his mother he’s incorrigible, possibly damaged, and cannot return to the room until he’s learned some self-control.

Honestly? I had to stop watching 30 minutes into the debate. But I misspoke. What these two were having was not a “debate” in the understood term of two people confronting each other with their ideas and arguments. Instead, under the aegis of said bimbo, it was a bad cartoon, with Kaine as the unfunny funny guy and Pence as the beleaguered straight man. It is a perfect metaphor for how debased our politics have become.

I will read the debate tomorrow when I can filter out Hopped-Up Kaine and Breathy Bimbo and, instead, focus on what Kaine and Pence had to say. For now, please consider this an open thread and toss in whatever comments you like regarding this national embarrassment.

For more Veep debate coverage, be sure to check out WOW! Magazine, the online collaborative magazine from the Watcher’s Council and its friends. I know there will be posts up tomorrow about the debate.
