Brigadoon is a musical with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. Songs from the musical, such as “Almost Like Being in Love” have become standards.

It tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant with God, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave, or the enchantment will be broken and the site and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever. Two American tourists, lost in the Scottish Highlands, stumble upon the village just as a wedding is about to be celebrated, and their arrival has serious implications for the village’s inhabitants.

Brigadoom is a dark comedy with a biography loosely based on Dreams of my father and the author’s own personal Audacity of Hope. Due to a budget crisis, the musical will lift most of the lyrics from Almost Like Being in Love. In the new revamped version, the story is set in the magical kingdom of Congress, where the inhabitants view themselves as the enchanted. The convenant with their leader, who is more than a deity, proclaimed ‘Follow Me’ or  we shall perish from global warming within 100 years. The ‘One’ promised Hope in (ex) Change for their souls and a world of unclenched fists, electric cars, windmills and joy, peace and prosperity. Those who dare to leave will be branded as Bible and Gun Republicans, Independents or worse UNBELIEVERS and DENIERS and shall be dispatched to outback of Crawford, Texas to be mocked by the media, magazines and morons.

The story takes a turn when bloggers, who had yet to come under the spell of Brigadoom and tartan plaids release the real music …Why do fools fall in love, Let it snow and I cast a spell on you.
