Freeing Israel from the shackles of “world approval”

It is always a pleasure to read Victor Davis Hanson.  Today, I think, it is a must to read him, as he looks at the extraordinary (and impossible) standards to which Israel is held.  He believes, as I have long believed myself, that if you’re “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” — which is the perennial standard applied to Israel — you should just do what you need to do and to Hell with everyone else.

In that regard, let me say that what has always held Israel back is the need not to alienate America, her only friend.  Now that her only friend has manifestly abandoned her, there is nothing to stop her from going her own way.

The Holocaust taught Israel that you cannot just stand by meekly and hope that those who call for your death don’t mean it.  They do.
