Do we have any gun control before and afters?

I read yesterday an assertion that Great Britain, with its stricter gun control has fewer murders but more rapes, burglaries, robberies, and other crimes than the U.S.  I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is true, it could be as much because of cultural differences as anything.  Comparing apples to oranges.

But it got me to wondering whether there have been any before and after studies in the United States.  For example, City X or State Y adopted a strong(er) gun control law.  Comparing the last year (or 3 or 5 years or whatever) before the new law with the first equal number of years thereafter, murder by gun went down X%, but murder by other weapons went up A%, rape up B%, burglaries up C%, etc.

It strikes me that the gun control debate often goes on in a factual vacuum.  But by now we’ve had enough changes in the law in various places that we ought to have some hard data to talk about.  Does anyone know of any?
