Who knew Al Sharpton was a comedian?

The venerable Rev. Spooner in England was famed for transposing letters and whole syllables in words and phrases, as well as muddling up ideas.  Although many stories attributed to him are apocryphal, he himself admitted that he said “Kinkering Congs Their Titles Take.”

My person favorite arose when he entirely reversed an idea.  Thus, when speaking of a widow, he allegedly said that “her husband was eaten by missionaries.”  Thanks to Rev. Spooner, a new word entered the English language:  “spoonerism.”

In our lifetime, another reverend, although certainly not a venerable one, might get a new word of his own.  Perhaps a completely incoherent expression will be called a “sharptonism.”
