While We’re Speaking of Heroes…..

I give you Jaime Herrera Beutler and her husband, Daniel.   She represents a district in Washington state, and on June 3 announced that their baby had been diagnosed with a bad disease, Potter Sequence….a disorder of the kidneys that leads to insufficient amniotic fluid and damages the lungs.  The disease is not just “bad”; to date it has been uniformly fatal to the babies afflicted.

Jaime and Daniel are pro-life and mean it.  They enlisted friends and family in prayer and began looking for options…someone who had had a baby stricken with the same problem told them about an unproven treatment – a weekly infusion of  saline into the uterus to mimic amniotic fluid – and Johns Hopkins agreed to help them try it.

Apparently, the infusions stopped the progress of the Potter Sequence, because two weeks ago, Abigail Rose Beutler was born in Portland, OR!  Only 28 weeks along, she weighed in at only 2 pounds 12 ounces, but is active and breathing on her own, the first known baby with Potter Sequence to do so.  Her kidney problems are being dealt with by peritoneal dialysis for the time being.

I’ll be praying for this family, and if you’re a praying person, please join me.
