Welcome, all, on this 20th day of Oct.  On this day:

1803 — Congress approved the Louisiana Purchase, that being the purchase of all of the land claimed by France on the continent of North America.  Napoleon Bonaparte had considered creating a new French colonial empire in North America before opting to sell the land to help fund his conquest of Europe.  The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the size of the land claimed by the United States.

1818 — The United States and Britain sign the Treaty of 1818, finally agreeing on the boundary between the U.S. and Canada.  The treaty established the boundary at roughly the 49th Parallel and marked a final end to efforts by the United States, first in 1775 and then again in 1812, to invade and conquer Canada.

Today is also World Statistics Day . . . though rumors are that only 2.73% of all people celebrate it.
