The Bookworm Thinker for Oct. 28 2021

Welcome, all, on this date of 28 Oct.  On this day:

1704 — On this date, the most influential of the Enlightenment political philosophers, Dr. John Locke, passed away.  He was an author of several influential works, the most important being his magnum opus, The Second Treatise of Government, that being the second part of Two Treatises of Government (available for free online).  In it, he articulates a philosophy of civil government that captured the ethos of the 17th century English revolutionary movement, grounding his philosophy firmly in a generic Protestant Christianity.  It seems likely that Two Treatises was written prior to 1688, in part to gain support for a revolution against King James II.  That revolution took place before Two Treatises was published in 1689.  That said, the publication was in plenty of time for the American Revolution.  Locke’s philosophy played a very important role in justifying the American Revolution — his formulation of the condition for a justifiable rebellion against central government was all but quoted verbatim by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence — and his writings significantly informed the drafting of the Constitution.

Now on to the important part of this post.

Ms. Book W. Room, writing under the nom de guerre of Andrea Widburg, is employed by the conservative site, American Thinker, to edit submissions to the site and to write several daily posts of her own.  Below are her posts on this date.  Since commentary to the posts are restricted at American Thinker (long story), feel free to comment on the day’s offerings below.

Today’s Offerings:

Under Biden, passports are about self-esteem, not security

Attorney General Merrick Garland yesterday demonstrated that he is unfit for office as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, much less as a justice of the Supreme Court. Whatever reservations you may have about Mitch McConnell, be grateful that kept this hack off the Supreme Court.

Garland basically stonewalled on all the difficult questions that he faced. He defended his now-notorious memo to the FBI, written in response (in 4 days!) to a letter from the National School Boards Association, even as GOP senators repeatedly pointed out that the NSBA now has apologized for it. . . .

Leftists reach peak madness when the subject is lesbians and transgenderism

One of the defining characteristics of American leftism is misogyny. Leftists work to encourage women to kill their babies and, of those allowed to live, to hand them over to the state so that women can dedicate themselves to a career. As “Caitlyn” Jenner and “Rachel” Levine show, fake women get accolades for accomplishments that should belong to women (“Woman of the year,” “Four-star admiral”). And now that transgenderism is the “in” thing, lesbians are being told that they’re transphobic if they don’t embrace (literally) so-called “transgender women” (i.e., mentally-ill men).

On Wednesday, three stories popped up on my computer but they are, in fact, all different facets of the same story. Before I get to them, I’d like to share with you a true story going back to the 1980s, involving a woman I knew. . . .
