Not to worry: it’s happened before

A lot of people at this blog predicted that, if Obama became president, the cult of personality would see lots of babies named after him. That was a good prediction. Before you worry too much about the larger, cult-like implications, remember that this is not a new phenomenon in the African-American community, which has a history of naming children after admired political figures. Enjoy this delightful 1938 song from Ella Fitzgerald and don’t worry too much about a lot of happy little boys named Barack:

Back in the Bronx of the ’50s and ’60s, there was a joke that went like this:
Q: Who were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Franklin Roosevelt?
A: The last three white guys with those names.
