Don Quixote’s Thought for the Day: So, what’s the score?

Let’s see who can come closest to predicting the winner and final score of the Super Bowl. The winner gets . . . well, actually nothing except the title of the Bookwormroom’s top prognosticator and a whole year’s worth of bragging rights. I’ll start by saying Indy wins by a score of 34-24. What’s your guess, ah, informed prediction?

Well, DQ, I have to say I think your figure is pretty good. But, just to get the ball rolling, I’m going to call for a 27-16 game, Colts, with Manning sufficiently, but not so easily, scoring TDs, and the Colts defense having to contend with a streakily resourceful Brees.
If my prediction wins, I expect lamb shank on your tab at Fabrizio’s.
I agree. My heart is on the Saints, my head says, Colts.
The Saints don’t have a consistent defense. What they are is oppportunistic in taking the ball away – but that’s not going to work against Peyton Manning and his receivers. If the Saints’ defense is to have a chance, it will be in forcing fumbles, not interceptions. But the odds are against that. I’ll give them one takeaway in the first three quarters.
Meanwhile, Indy’s defense is consistently sound and will stop the Saints very good offense enough. And Peyton Manning and the Colts offense shines, making few mistakes.
So, by the end of the third, this will be another of those disappointing Super Bowl runaways, 34-17.
In garbage time in the 4th, after the game is all over (and the Colts go conservative), New Orleans scores two late touchdowns, the Colts just add a field goal eating up the clock in there somewhere, and the score ends up 37-31. But it won’t be as close as the score seems. If the Saints recover that onside kick with 1:06 left on the clock and no timeouts left, however, it might get exciting at the very end.
Indy 37-31.
Indy 38-28
Patriots 38, Whatevers 23. Which shows how much interest I have in the outcome of this year’s game. IMHO, the Pats will not be back, unfortunately from my point of view.
Colts 36, Saints 30.
The Saints can win if their special teams make some big plays. If Reggie Bush runs wild the Colts might be in trouble, otherwise I think once they get a lead they hold it easily.
Dammit guys! Someone has to take the Saints.
Mike Devx: your clinical and heartless analysis was breathtakingly accurate and I hate you for it.
Alright, Mr. Manning is capable of falling apart in any post season game. The Colts are playing well, but I *want* the Saints to win. Since my scenario has Manning screwing up, I have to predict a lowish (below 55) scoring game.
28-21 Saints.
Have to admit though…this is a bit of an “I-don’t-care” bowl. But since I am going to get to spend the day in the City watching the game with my best friend, any football is good football.
Go Saints.
“Mike Devx: your clinical and heartless analysis was breathtakingly accurate and I hate you for it.”
jlibson, you’ll get used to Mike. He’s broken all our hearts at one time or another, but, dang, he calls shots like nobody else.
“But since I am going to get to spend the day in the City watching the game with my best friend, any football is good football.”
Amen.
If I were truly any good at this, I’d be sitting on about fifty million bucks right now, and people would be breathlessly awaiting each of my weekly columns covering the Vegas spreads. ;-)
Instead, I merely pick winners and losers in my brother’s annual NCAA bowl game pick em contest, at ten bucks a pop. And this year, I was threatening to be the winner of his “Toilet Bowl” – the one contestant whose picks were actually the worst! (That was one of my three entries)
But ya gotta have fun and run with it! :-)
Alright 31-17 Saints 2 minutes left. Who’s your buddy?
(of course as soon as I go to write this Manning makes a huge completion…oy!)
