The Harvard story reminds me of a lengthy comment by JJ a few months ago listing all of the instances since the Civil War in which Republicans supported equality for blacks while Democrats fought against it. And yet today the “conventional wisdom” is that it is the Republicans who are the racist party of the KKK (and lately, the Tea Party) and the Democrats who have always have championed civil rights.
As usual, I got curious about how many famous blacks have gradusted Harvard. Though the number of blacks to attend and graduate is comparable to any other university, the famous seems to number only one before Obama, Jr – W.E.B. Dubois is 1890. The great majority of famous black university grads chose to attened other schools like Alcorn State, Antioch College, Colgate, Columbia, Fisk, Florida A&M, Grambling, Howard, Lincoln, Michigan State, Morehouse, Morgan State, Spelman, UCLA, Tuskegee, Stanford, University of New Mexico, and many others all had multiple black grads who went on to be distiguished and well known. Even Yale has had more famous black grads than Harvard including Clarence Thomes, Anita Hill, and Henry Louis Gates. Perhaps blacks don’t find Harvard as alluring as whites, preferring schools with better educations to schools with better reputations.

Add one to the Haavaad list: Thomas Sowell. He got his Bachelor’s from Harvard, his Master’s from Columbia, and his doctorate from Chicago.
