Previously undiscovered video of Obama’s high school years

(I’m sure someone already made this little visual joke back in May, when Maraniss’ book first came out but having just watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High for the first time in decades, I couldn’t resist.)

Another Obama idea was roof hits. “When they were chooming in a car, all the windows had to be rolled up so no smoke blew out and went to waste,” Maraniss writes. “When the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling.”

I had just moved to SoCAl in 1980 and Tony, and I went to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. As we walked through the parking lot to the entrance, two young guys got out of their car and walked to the entrance in front of us. I had no idea who the two were until later when we got back to Tony’s home. His mother was an artist and wanted to know what we had seen. He told her we had seen Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen in the parking lot.

I really enjoyed Sean Penn as Spicoli and Ray Walston as Mr. Hand.  I can’t think of a single Sean Penn performance after that one that I enjoyed.

Book, I think you’re right about Jennifer Jason Leigh’s experiences, but for me what I took away from the movie was that that was more of a cautionary tale than an advocacy of her choices.  If there was a teenage girl out there that saw the movie and thought “I want to do everything exactly the way that she did it!”, well, that would boggle the mind.
