Illinois versus Oklahoma

oppositesIt was a crazy day today (not bad, just crazy), so blogging wasn’t happening.  At points, I was so busy, I had to remind myself to breathe.  Friends still sent me emails, though, including this one, which Zhombre forwarded to me.  I have no idea whether the facts are true, although I can tell that the Illinois part was written not long after Rahm Emanuel became Chicago’s mayor.  Without having fact-checked it, I offer it to you as is:

Part 1—Illinois

Some interesting data on the State of Illinois … There are more people on welfare in Illinois than there are people working. Chicago pays the highest wages to teachers than anywhere else in the U.S., averaging $110,000/year. Their pensions average 80-90% of their income. Wow, are Illinois and Chicago great or what? Be sure to read till the end. I’ve never heard it explained better. Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago? Body count: In the last six months, 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago. 221 killed in Iraq; AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US.

Here’s the Chicago chain of command:
President: Barack Obama
Senator: Dick Durbin
House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr.
Governor: Pat Quinn
House leader: Mike Madigan
Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike)
Mayor: Rohm Emanuel
The leadership in Illinois – all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago. Of course, they’re all blaming each other. Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any! Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country. Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. Can’t blame Republicans; there aren’t any!

This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And he is going to ‘fix’ Washington politics for us?

George Ryan is no longer Governor, he is in prison. He was replaced by Rob Blagoyavic who is, that’s right, also in prison. And Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned a couple of weeks ago, because he is fighting to not be sent to… that’s right, prison.

The Land of Lincoln, where our governors make our license plates. What?

As long as they keep providing entitlements to the population of Chicago, nothing is going to change, except the state will go broke before the country does.
“Anybody who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian.”

Don’t forget Detroit, another good example…

PART 2—Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the only state that Obama did not win even one county in the last election… While veryone is focusing on Arizona’s new law, look what Oklahoma has been doing!!!
An update from Oklahoma:

Oklahoma law passed, 37 to 9 an amendment to place the Ten Commandments on the front entrance to the state capitol. The feds in D.C., along with the ACLU, said it would be a mistake. Hey this is a conservative state, based on Christian values… HB 1330

Guess what… Oklahoma did it anyway.

Oklahoma recently passed a law in the state to incarcerate all illegal immigrants, and ship them back to where they came from unless they want to get a green card and become an American citizen. They all scattered. HB 1804. This was against the advice of the Federal Government, and the ACLU, they said it would be a mistake.

Guess what… Oklahoma did it anyway.

Recently we passed a law to include DNA samples from any and all illegal’s to the Oklahoma database, for criminal investigative purposes. Madam Pelosi said it was unconstitutional SB 1102

Guess what… Oklahoma did it anyway.

Several weeks ago, we passed a law, declaring Oklahoma as a Sovereign state, not under the Federal Government directives. Joining Texas, Montana and Utah as the only states to do so.  More states are likely to follow: Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Carolina’s, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia, Mississippi and Florida. Save your confederate money, it appears the South is about to rise up once again. HJR 1003

The federal Government has made bold steps to take away our guns. Oklahoma, a week ago, passed a law confirming people in this state have the right to bear arms and transport them in their vehicles. I’m sure that was a setback for the criminals. The Liberals didn’t like it — But….

Guess what… Oklahoma did it anyway.

Just this month, the state has voted and passed a law that ALL drivers’ license exams will be printed in English, and only English, and no other language. They have been called racist for doing this, but the fact is that ALL of the road signs are in English only. If you want to drive in Oklahoma, you must read and write English. Really simple. By the way, the Liberals don’t like any of this either

Guess what… who cares… Oklahoma is doing it anyway.

I don’t want to become the resident grammarian, but “I had to remind myself to breathe.”
Please take that in the spirit is was offered. :)

Here is Oklahoma and Illinois “by the numbers.” There is many points of information that is not exactly apples to apples: from different sources, from different years. But I think that even so, it’s more apples to apples (maybe Golden Delicious vs. Macintosh) than apples to organges. HOWEVER…
Illinois is like two separate states: Chicagoland, and the rest of the state. The population of the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area / Chicago Combined Statistal Area is about 3/4’s the state’s ENTIRE population: between 9.5 million and 9.8 million.
    Oklahoma Population: 3,814,820
    Illinois Population: 12,882,135
Oklahoma Registered voters: 2,000,610 (1/15/2012); 47.15% Democrat; 41.4 Republican; 11.45% Unaffiliated (BTW, would you have guessed it was THIS breakdown?)
Illinois Registered Voters: 6,425,000 (unable to find party breakdown)
Oklahoma Tax Revenue: Unable to find
    Illinois Tax revenue: $29.7 million
Oklahoma Real GDP 160 billion USD (June 2013)
Illinois Real GDP: 651.5 billion USD (2012)
    Oklahoma Income per capita: $35,480
    Illinois income per capita: $43,159
    Oklahoma Median Household Income: $43,225
    Illinois Median household income $54,124
Oklahoma Cost of Living; “Lowest in the US.”
Illinois Cost of Living: “Higher than US Average”
Oklahoma Unemployment Rate: 5.5% (Oct 2013; USBLS)
Illinois Unemployment Rate: 8.9% (Oct 2013; USBLS); Chicago Unemployment Rate: 10.9% (Oct 2013; USBLS)
    Oklahoma poverty rate: 16.6%
    Illinois poverty rate: 13.7%
Oklahoma Government Share of Economy: 15.9%
Illinois Government Share of Economy: Unable to find
    Oklahoma Crime (2012): Murder: 21 (5.7/100K), Rape: 1675 (43.9/100K); Aggravated assault: 13,163 (345/100K)
    Illinois (2010): Murder: 706 (5.5/100K); Rapes 3,033 (23.6/100K). Aggravated Assault: 32,042 (249.7/100K)
    Chicago (2009): 459 (16/100K); 1439 (50.4/100K; 15,743 (551.8/100K)
There is a lot of apples to oranges in comparing the two states because of the Chicago thing.

Leftists own Illinois. Leftists have yet to occupy Oklahoma and bring the death rates of Iraq or Afghanistan with them. That’s the only difference I need to know about.

Chicago and Illinois are a mess, but this referenced hit piece is not accurate.
I can’t fiske the other numbers this time, but I can address one factoids regarding teachers that should raise questions about all the other claims made. I can assure you that, based on personal experience, teachers do not earn $110,000 on average: this true only for a small percentage of teachers, mostly PhDs in certain high-income neighborhoods, for their last remaining years of service prior to retirement. Teachers’ salaries do spike in their final years of teaching, but starting salaries for teachers are abysmally low. Also, they do not earn 90% of their income earned in their final years as a retirement pension: The Illinois teacher retirement system requires that teachers a) give-up their right to social security income altogether, b) contribute 10% of their salaries toward their pensions, which the State is supposed to match with its own 10% but has not done  (in neighboring Wisconsin, they put 0% toward their pensions until Gov. Walkers’ reforms…now they only put 2-3% toward their pensions). Because the State of Illinois looted the pension funds (essentially taking teachers’ money out of the funds in exchange for IOUs), teachers will not see much of the pensions that have been promised them and, remember, there is no Social Security for them to fall back on.
There is plenty of corruption in the State, Illinois teachers’ union, school district and, especially, at the administrator levels (where you do see sky-high salaries approved by pliant school boards), but this kind of misleading dreck harms rather than helps the cause of much-needed reform.

Here is an interesting database that can be searched. Check out what comes up on the 264 pages of City of Chicago School District:

BTW, the average starting salary seems to range between $28K (which is indeed “abysmally low”) and $49.5K which is not. The average starting salary is abour $43K which is not too shabby. The charter school teachers seem, in general, to be among the less pair, regardless of whether they hold a bachelor’s or a masters.
1509 of the 26,377 teachers/administrators working for the City of Chicago School District earn more than $100,000. Of those, 216, or 14.31% are teachers. (I’ve excluded Ms. Umbles.) The average salary among all of those making more than $100K is around $123K (Again, I’ve excluded Ms. Umbles.)
2270 out of 26,377 are full-time teachers/administrators who make less than $50K. Of those, 2106 are teachers, or 92.77%
BTW, only 8.6% of those who are adminstrators/teachers make less than $50,000. 86.29% of the administrators/teachers who work for the City of Chicago School District make between $50K and $100 which is none too shabby.

BTW, Leslie Umbles, a High School Teacher with a Masters Degree and 28 years of experience saw his (her?) salary go up from $82,875 in 2010to $238,386 in 2011. Now there has GOT to be an interesting story there!

lee – you miss the point.  As a former Oklahoman, I am still proud of them because their mindset is different.  They are producers, not looters.  They have suffered some devastating tornados over the past few years and every time they have quietly set about rebuilding, not expecting anyone to help but graciously thankful when others did.  This is a state that endured the Depression, the Dust Bowl, World War II and kept going.  They are survivors.  I look at the Senators Oklahoma sends to Washington and wish that I had someone like Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn representing me.  I miss living there badly and though it is not perfect, it was home.

The numbers don’t do Oklahoma justice.
I’ve visited Oklahoma City and one of the reservations, and both were very nice, clean, friendly places. I thought Oklahoma City would be an excellent place to raise kids. I think it does make a HUGE difference that Oklahoma has one of the lowest costs of living among the states.
BTW, the Obamacare premiums are the lowest in Oklahoma than in any other state–across the board, from bronze to platinum.

What this propaganda poster fails to do is to even try to claim that Illinois is ruled by child eating demons that are being enriched by greedy, evil, public money.
It just vaguely has an “opposite” theme that tries to jam together the realities of life into two “opposites” state wise, implying Oklahoma is good and Illinois is bad.
Get rid of the implication and you can also get rid of the “opposite” theme. You don’t need an opposite theme of money vs money. You need a Good vs Evil theme where Illinois is ruled by Demons. That is what people should be working on.
