The will of the people

Posted on July 4, 2006 by Bookworm

I’ve been thinking a bit lately about America’s unique focus on the individual and not on the State.  (I blogged about it here, when I was thinking about nations that turn on their own citizens.)  The fact that power resides with the individual in America is one of the bulwarks

Patriotism in the modern age

Posted on July 4, 2006 by Bookworm

My blogging will be light to nonexistent today. However, before this flu knocked me off my pins, I had put together a few thoughts about patriotism, which you can read at American Thinker. UPDATE:  Like death and taxes, it is inevitable that, when I write about something, someone smarter and

Happy July 4th!

Posted on July 4, 2006 by Bookworm

My internet got into the holiday spirit and shut itself down.  So it’s only now that I’m able to do what I intended to do long ago:  Wish all of you a very happy July 4th! FacebookTweet

The First Crypto-Conservative/Neo-Conservative Carnival

Posted on July 3, 2006 by Bookworm

Welcome to the July 4, 2006 edition of the first crypto-conservative carnival. Because submissions focused on neo-conservatism (I guess all the cryptos are in hiding), I decided to make that my focus too — and I’ve learned a lesson for the next carnival, should I have one. From Joe, who

Good music

Posted on July 3, 2006 by Bookworm

If you like Christian vocal jazz (mostly a cappella stuff) you should definitely check out Take 6.  We saw them yesterday.  Even though I didn’t feel well (turned out I was coming down with the flu that’s making me miserable today), I still managed to enjoy this group, a lot.

The right choice in Mexico

Posted on July 3, 2006 by Bookworm

I didn’t blog about the Mexican elections, preferring to wait and see what happened.  I’m happy that I didn’t get my knickers in a twist, and I’m pleased that the Mexican voters, having looked into socialism’s abyss, opted for the Conservative candidate: Mexico’s conservative presidential candidate Felipe Calderon declared victory

Gee, no bias here

Posted on July 2, 2006 by Don Quixote

DQ here.  I just read a brochure from XM radio that demonstrates the liberal bias-blindspot.  Each XM station gets a little (always positive) write-up in the brochure.  They are advertising their product, after all.  To serve their diverse audience, XM includes a variety of talk stations, including AmericaRight and AirAmerica.  Here

As always, Mark Steyn gets it

Posted on July 2, 2006 by Bookworm

Mark Steyn: There are several ways to fight a war. On the one hand, you can put on a uniform, climb into a tank, rumble across a field and fire on the other fellows’ tank. On the other, you can find a 12-year-old girl, persuade her to try on your

To thine own self be true

Posted on July 1, 2006 by Bookworm

I just got a new computer, and I really want to take some time to set it up.  My son has other ideas:  “Mommy, I want you to play with me.  You’re turning into a boring old lady.”  How did he know? FacebookTweet

Dog is my co-pilot

Posted on July 1, 2006 by Bookworm

We spent another fruitless couple of hours at our local humane society.  This is not the type of humane society that euthanizes dogs, so it doesn’t have any real impetus to get dogs out of the shelter.  Instead, it’s goal is to find the perfect home for every dog.  And

It’s a lovely idea, but

Posted on June 30, 2006 by Bookworm

There’s an NPR story here about music being used as a therapy to aid chronic pain sufferers or the dying.  Anecdotal reports are good, but there are no scientific, double-blind, replicable studies yet to back it up.  I have my own concern about the practice.  I like listening to music,

Religion lite

Posted on June 30, 2006 by Bookworm

I sort of just sat back and sniggered when the Presbyterian Church (USA), after first attacking Jews decided next to go after men. How else to explain the new doctrine the Church has put into effect: The divine Trinity – “Father, Son and Holy Spirit” – could also be known

There won’t always be an England

Posted on June 30, 2006 by Bookworm

How did England so rapidly plummet from the world’s top dog to a nation that has no pride, no sense of its own history (except to be abjectly embarrassed by that history), and no sense of self-preservation. The latter appears in matters large, as in its inability to confront its

Government’s inability to police fraud

Posted on June 30, 2006 by Bookworm

We just got yet another reminder (as if we need one), about Government ineptitude at managing its own programs: Welfare recipients and their friends and relatives are defrauding taxpayers of $500 million a year through the county’s child care programs, a grand jury report concludes. The report released Thursday found
