Here’s one you should read, in which Rick Moran declares war on social conservatives:

Do you remember a single Reagan speech in which he did not touch upon conservative social themes? Me neither. As you read that article, note how Moran tries to claim he’s speaking for Reagan in today’s “tripartite conservatism” : Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. And he still has never listed what his form of conservatism would consist of. He fears it would be seen solely as Democrat-lite, and you know what, he’s right. Because that’s exactly what it would be.

I’m sure I’m the pot calling the kettle black. I haven’t outlined many particular positions myself. I don’t really care which of my personal opinions are part of the winning coalition compromise. I simply know that without that compromise package between the freedom-libertarians and the responsibility-social-conservatives, whatever form the compromise package takes, we lose.

I’ll probably shut up (for awhile) in my calls for conservatives to spend equal time discussing both individual freedom and individual responsibility, as the true cornerstones of conservatism both in liberty and in economics. (I leave foreign policy aside, because I think we’re all mostly in agreement there.)

But if you think you can throw social conservatives under the bus and still win this nation back from the Democrats, you’re crazy. Economic conservatism cannot stand alone. A sole focus on individual freedoms alone will not create a country that you will love. And now, for some number of months, I’ll step off this soapbox.
