The news has a surreal quality

One of the things I like about the Drudge Report is the way that Matt Drudge, almost as if he’s writing free form poetry, assembles little essays by aggregating headlines.  He’s a master at this.  Despite the fact that the headlines are out there for anyone else to assemble, no one has the artistry to create a page that is a snapshot of the world as it is at a precise moment in time.  Drudge’s headlines today, however, have a surreal quality.  It’s not Drudge’s fault.  It’s the news he has to deal with.

In addition to the staggering news that Dems are raising our debt ceiling by $1.8 trillion dollars (something that should scare the bejeezus out of every American), Drudge assembled three other fascinating little essays.  The first is about the way in which Leftists want to destroy people’s ability to reproduce:

CHINA: Population control called key to Global Warming deal…

Canada’s National Newspaper calls for Worldwide One Child Policy..

The second little essay is a short rumination about politics at home, national security abroad and Climategate:

Five Americans were in Pakistan for jihad…

Reid Asks Republicans for Weekend Off, Has Fundraiser to Get To…

GOOD MORNING, STEPHANOPOULOS!

Greece May Be First EU Default…

Climategate: Gore falsifies the record…

SHOCK POLL: 44% want Bush back over Obama…

And the third little essay is about l’affair de Tiger, a scandal that should cause us all to ruminate about celebrity, race and the media:

AS THE GOLF BALL TURNS:

Another porn star becomes TENTH woman to be linked…

Lawmaker drops Congressional Gold Medal push…

Texts to alleged mistress reveal tortured affair…

Events without Tiger see TV ratings slump 50%…

If you’re like me, you have an almost surreal sense of a world spin insanely off its axis.  These are not normal headlines.  These are the headlines of a hysterical planet.

Sometimes I miss the days of the old dinosaur media.  Even as they told us life was awful, they comforted us by telling us that, if we’d just vote Left, everything would be good again.  We’re now denied that consolation.  The internet shows that these assurances were lies.  Knowing that, we can no longer lapse into soporific apathy, but must, instead, act, swiftly and assuredly, to get the world spinning normally again.
