Don Quixote’s Thought for the Day: And ounce for an ounce

Making breakfast this morning I was reading the label of my syrup.  Bottle contains 12 ounces.  Serving size: 1/4 cup.  Servings per bottle approximately 6.  Am I missing something here?  Why not just say serving size 2 ounces?  Is there some kind of obscure federal regulation requiring label makers to be obtuse?

There is a broader question here.  What do people think about labeling laws in general?  I like having the information quite a lot.  But should it be required?  And, as is inevitable when the goverment starts to regulate something, the trend is toward ever greater disclosure  requirements.   How much is enough?  Once we let the government’s nose into the tent, how do we keep the whole governmental camel from coming in?
