Just Because Music — Thoroughly Modern Millie

The news has been so unrelievedly grim lately, I’m badly in need of a little escapism.  Today, for some reason, my brain took a vacation to a movie I’ve always thought of as a bad movie with some good scenes — Thoroughly Modern Millie.  I’ve always been especially fond of the opening credits:

As a wandering aside, Carol Channing has a semi-starring role in Thoroughly Modern Millie.  From the first moment I saw the film, I thought she was completely awful.  Way too big, if you know what I mean.  However, I had the great good fortune to see her some years later in a Hello Dolly! revival (this would have been back in 1978 or 1979).  The stage was Channing’s proper milieu.  The same overly large quality that is irritating on the big screen was fabulous when viewed from the balcony.  No wonder she was the toast of Broadway, both as Dolly and as Lorelei Lee in Gentleman Prefer Blondes.
