This is how they decide to celebrate the High Holy Days?

Posted on September 5, 2007 by Bookworm

Through a reader, I just got wind of the shenanigans (or, should I say, the Sheehan-igans) going on at Beyt Tikkun, the ultra Left wing synagogue in Berkeley. It turns out that the special guest at this year’s High Holy Days is going to be none other than Cindy “get

Don’t panic! It’s still me.

Posted on September 5, 2007 by Bookworm

It’s probably due to my increasing decrepitude, but I’ve been having a problem reading the dark-gray-on-light-gray text of my own blog. I thought, if it’s a problem for me, it may well be a problem for others. I’m therefore experimenting with a new template. I’ll try this out for a

Maybe De Palma could get it released

Posted on September 5, 2007 by Bookworm

Brian De Palma had no problem getting a ferociously anti-military film worldwide play. That might be because he was just going up against the wussy Bush crowd in the White House. If he’d been challenging the Clinton world view, things might have been entirely different, as they seem to be

A web petition to stay the course

Posted on September 5, 2007 by Bookworm

The Captain is hosting a web petition urging Congress to stay the course in Iraq — something that seems sensible given the increasing evidence that the Surge is achieving military success and destabilizing the Al Qaeda crew in Iraq.  So, if you haven’t already, check it out and, perhaps, fill

Will the scandals never stop?!

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

If you picture me now, think of me in a Munch-like scream. I’m overwhelmed by all the scandals everywhere one looks. Believe it or not, I’m not actually thinking about Larry Craig right now. That’s a personal failing. It’s appropriate that he resigned because he apparently committed a criminal act,

The Israel lobby

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

With the resurgent charge that there is a pro-Israel lobby destroying U.S. interests around the world, I’d like you to read this essay, from George Friedman, of Stratfor, a geopolitical intelligence organization. I’m publishing it with permission of Stratfor, which included this message in the email I receive regularly with

They report, you figure things out

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

It was very interesting today to see the different way in which Reuters and AP reported happenings in Denmark.  I find myself in the surprising position of saying that Reuters did a decent job. First, the lede and opening few paragraphs of the Reuters report: Danish police arrest 8 Muslims

History as politics

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

Mr. Bookworm tried to get me interested last night in an endless miniseries from a couple of years ago called Into the West, which has Steven Spielberg as its executive producer. Here’s the IMDB plot outline: An epic tale of two figures during the American colonization of the west, one

Weird times

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

I enjoyed this observation from Jay Nordlinger, so pass it on to you: You know that Elvira Arellano, the famous deported Mexican lady, has become a hero in her home country. I have to ask: What kind of country makes a hero out of a person whose highest ambition is

The economic nature of Islamic conquest

Posted on September 4, 2007 by Bookworm

I just had to share with you Mark Steyn’s brilliant insight into the economic nature of Islamic conquest: The jizya is the poll tax paid by non-Muslims to their Muslim betters. One cause of the lack of economic innovation in the Islamic world is that they’ve always placed the main

More on the morality of supporting Israel, not the Palestinians

Posted on September 3, 2007 by Bookworm

After a fascinating discussion ran at my blog regarding Israel’s legal standing, I did a post saying that, even if I doubted Israel’s rights in the land (which I don’t), I would support Israel anyway because she is a true Western Democracy being besieged by a a malevolent, amoral travesty

Reform Jews embrace non-religion

Posted on September 3, 2007 by Bookworm

I was not raised as a religious Jew, but I’ve still managed to be a bit disdainful of reform Jews. Back in the 1970s, I figured out that almost nothing distinguished reform Judaism from a sing along folk festival, right down to the obligatory long haired guitar player who always

The latest censored Berkeley Breathed cartoon

Posted on September 2, 2007 by Bookworm

Twenty five newspapers refused to publish it, but you can see it here.  It’s not one of Breathed’s best humor wise (not like some of his past cartoons), but it makes a bigger point and I say shame to the craven publishers who won’t run it. Hat tip:  Hot Air

What is art?

Posted on September 2, 2007 by Bookworm

In the old days — pre-camera — I think that it was pretty easy to answer when asked “What is art?”.  Art served four major purposes: to elevate God, to aggrandize the rich and powerful, to decorate spaces, and to record images in a pre-photographic era. Some stuff was good,

Matt Damon is no Fred Astaire

Posted on September 2, 2007 by Bookworm

Before Fred Astaire became a star, it was normal for movie dance sequences to be shot in bits and pieces, with the camera moving around from feet to face, and intermixing other scenes, all to hide the fact that the dancer could not dance. Fred put an end to that.
