Too much power

Posted on December 11, 2006 by Bookworm

I’m happily reading Carolly Erickson’s Royal Panoply: Brief Lives of the English Monarchs, a delightful jaunt through British history, as viewed through brief bios of its Kings and Queens. (Erickson is one of the absolute best writers about early British rulers, by the way.) I’m up to Richard II, who

As you sow, so shall you reap

Posted on December 11, 2006 by Bookworm

A non-murderous overlord is useful for two reasons: He keeps your own baser impulses battened down, and he provides a lightening rod for those same impulses. Take the overlord away, and those same tamped down impulses explode — against you and yours. Case in point? Gaza, sans Israel: Palestinian factions

An interesting blog for you to consider

Posted on December 11, 2006 by Bookworm

The English is slightly mangled,* but the analysis is strong over at Samson Blinded, a blog that characterizes itself as a “Machiavellian Perspective on the Middle East Conflict.” FacebookTweet

Things I learned this weekend

Posted on December 11, 2006 by Bookworm

I have a deadline that’s going to keep me hopping for a couple of hours, but I’ll share with you two things I learned this weekend. First, I learned that, in my very blue neighborhood, there are surprisingly large numbers of gun owners, wannabee gun owners, and hunters. Who knew?

The most beautiful car I’ve ever seen

Posted on December 10, 2006 by Bookworm

I am so not a car person, as Mr. Bookworm, frequently has reason to bemoan, but I’ve just seen a short video about the most beautiful car ever made in my humble opinion. FacebookTweet

All hail the Left!

Posted on December 10, 2006 by Bookworm

The Left hand, that is. It turns out that while we lefties are likely to die sooner (a statistic I’ve grown up hearing but can’t source), we’ll be smarter and faster along the way. All is know is that, despite having spent my entire life amongst right handers, I still

Sick, sick, sick, sick, sick

…and I’m not talking about the kid whose conduct triggered this story: A four-year-old hugged his teachers aide and was put into in-school suspension, according to the father. But La Vega school administrators have a different story. Damarcus Blackwell’s four-year-old son was lining-up to get on the bus after school

Twelve step program needed for AP and its faithful

Posted on December 8, 2006 by Bookworm

My understanding is that, if you have an abuse problem, you can’t treat it until you acknowledge it. I’ve already alluded to the fact that the AP resolutely refuses, ever, to acknowledge mistakes in its reporting. Apparently those who rely on its reporting to advance their agenda also refuse to

Domestic terrorism or just another bad guy?

Posted on December 8, 2006 by Bookworm

The Feds may have prevented an attack against shoppers in a mall a couple of hours away from Chicago: A Rockford man is being held on terrorism-related charges after he allegedly targeted a shopping mall. Derrick Shareef, 22, targeted the Cherry Vale shopping mall in Rockford, FBI spokesman Tom Simon

The AP’s at it again, and it’s been at it before

Posted on December 8, 2006 by Bookworm

Thanks to the blogosphere, this hasn’t been a good time for the AP, since it’s been caught with its pants down, exposing what can at best be called shoddy reporting, and at worst reprehensibly dishonest reporting. Rather than apologize and fix the problem, AP has gotten arrogant and refused to

It’s nice to see the shoe on the other foot

Posted on December 7, 2006 by Bookworm

Mr. Bookworm often chastizes me for the fact that, when he comes home from work, I’m tense and short with the children. I explain that when no one listens, but everyone fights, my frustration level is very, very high. Tonight, because I have a big project to do, after I

Let me just flaunt my brilliance here

Posted on December 7, 2006 by Bookworm

I swear that the following really, really gives me credibility to complain non-stop about my childrens’ education: You paid attention during 100% of high school!     85-100% You must be an autodidact, because American high schools don’t get scores that high! Good show, old chap! Do you deserve your

The New York Times continues to hide the ball from its readers

Posted on December 7, 2006 by Bookworm

I’m less interested in “Little Mosque On the Prairie,” a new Canadian show aiming to take a humorous look at how stressful it is to be a Muslim in the West (which is entirely different, of course from the stresses placed on Christians living in Muslim dominated countries), then I
